I thought it would be ok if I dried my jocks in your microwave |

Why do people think that microwaves can dry clothing? Maybe it’s TV that give people these ideas like the Seinfeld episode where Kramer heats his clothes up in the oven so that they feel warm when he puts them on.
Last night I was sitting at my desk doing work while my flat mate Rob was getting ready to go to the casino. I wasn’t paying too much attention to what he was doing, well, he was in the kitchen for a bit, in the laundry, upstairs showering and while he was up there I heard loud arcing from the kitchen. It took me a couple of seconds to realize that the noise was the unattended microwave having a fit while Rob was having a shower.
I sprung off my chair and rushed to the kitchen in a vain attempt to prevent damage. The arcing lit up the whole room and from the picture here you can see that the arcing was brighter than the LCD panel. I don’t know how long the microwave had been malfunctioning before I intervened but when I opened it up it was fried.

That little red patch in the center means its still pretty hot
There were flakes of carbon everywhere and sitting in the middle of the rotisserie were Rob’s wet jocks.

The first words that came to mind were “What the fuck man?!”. Look, I know jocks are just another item of clothing but fuck, there’s wet jocks in my microwave, and my microwave is dead. I think that if I had of rushed into the kitchen while the microwave was having a seizure and found; I dunno; pizza in there instead of wet jocks I would have shrugged my shoulders and thought; Oh well, the microwave has died.
Looking at the situation from a different perspective, I think that an item of wet clothing would appear no different than a meat pie to the microwave and so I guess I can’t really blame Rob for the microwave’s failure. However, Rob is a future engineer, he should know that microwaves heat things but don’t dry things, but in case there is any doubt I have since made it clear that items of clothing will not go in my new microwave.
About an hour ago I bought a new microwave online for $99 plus freight. I’m thinking that’s a bargain considering it’s a Sharp R395FS which retails for $395. Hey it’s a factory second but it has manufacturer’s warranty so I reckon I can’t lose. |
