Drive failure or smoke alarm |

At 4.30am this morning I had a hard drive failure and awoke to the sound of an alarm. At first I thought it was a smoke alarm and so I got out of bed at the speed of light. As there is no console attached to my server I could not immediately deactivate the alarm without cutting the power, so that’s what I did.
Although I haven’t checked yet, I suspect it is my TV recording drive which gets pretty hammered. It is full most of the time and is defragged each night I think. In case you don’t know, defragging a near full drive thrashes it.
There will be no service held for the drive, however there will be an autopsy. The drive has kindly donated it’s organs (magnets) to our work white board.
1pm Update:
Yep, it's the drive i suspected. These Seagate drives i bought seem to be about 1 to 2 mm higher than the other drives and they get jammed in my caddies. I remember now why i used it, knowing it was going to cop a flogging, its because i secretly wanted it to die.
